A perirectal abscess is a collection of pus in the deep tissues surrounding the anus. By contrast, a perianal abscess is a shallower collection of pus under the skin surrounding the anus. Both types of abscesses need immediate attention. A delay in treatment may cause serious worsening of the condition and unnecessary complications.

Even if the symptoms improve with home care, you should seek medical attention. Abscesses need to be evaluated and treated by a doctor. They rarely go away on their own. Many people need further special treatment to avoid complications or a return of the abscess.

I recently had one of these. It developed very quickly - mild discomfort Friday afternoon, pain & swelling Saturday, severe pain & more swelling Sunday. Went to my GP & had it lanced Monday. If you ever are unfortunate enough to have one, I HIGHLY recommend general anesthesia. Mine was done in the Doc's office under local, after which I drove myself home. Very unpleasant.
There are no words to describe the horror of what I just witnessed. My heart goes out to this young man. I can't even imagine how painful that must be. I've given birth 3 times & this abscess makes childbirth seem like a walk in the park.
